How to Make a Loop Yarn Blanket
I’ve always admired knitters and crocheters, but never really took the time to learn. Actually, that’s not true, there was this one time when I was pregnant with my oldest, and bored out of my mind when I went on maternity leave. I obsessively crocheted a baby blanket for him using the only stitch I knew how to do. This was before the days of blogging, so I had to figure out how to do it on my own. Anyway, when I saw this super soft loop yarn at the craft store, I was intrigued, and decided to learn how to make a loop yarn blanket. The best part about it? No knitting needles or crochet hooks required. It’s really super easy! (I made some improvements and a follow-up video that you can see on my how to make a loop yarn baby blanket post.)
They sell the loop yarn in all kinds of pretty colors, and all of it is super soft and fluffy. They even have some really bright, fun colors for kids to try. I’m thinking my 10 year old would like to make some scarves for her friends for Christmas.

To make a loop yarn blanket, all you’ll need is:
- loop yarn – 7 skeins (18yds each) to make a 50×60 inch throw. (The loop yarn can get kinda pricey, so make sure to get it when it’s on sale or use a coupon.)
- scissors
A crochet hook also helps at the end to weave in the loose ends, but it’s totally not necessary. I just happened to have one on hand (you know, from that baby blanket I made.)
I used 4 skeins of cream and 3 skeins of the variegated pink/gray/cream color for this blanket. I faded from the cream, to the pink, and back to cream again. I didn’t realize the pink variegated skeins had a little yellow in them, so I don’t love that. It makes part of the blanket look stained (or like a cat peed on them according to my sister… haha!) So maybe choose a color skein that doesn’t have the cream color in it. Other than that, I really love the design it made.
I put a border on my blanket by switching between knit and purl stitches. If you are just starting out, and find this confusing, just do the entire thing in a knit stitch. It’s really easy!

I absolutely love the way this blanket turned out. I usually don’t like crochet/knit blankets because I feel like the holes make them not warm enough. The fluffy yarn on these is so soft and really holds the heat in though.
I may need to make a couple more so everyone in our family can stop fighting over it on the couch. It is just so so fluffy!

I’m making a looped yarn blanket. And the directions are for 51″ wide and 60″ long. It calls for 108 yards of yarn. I got yarn on sale if I bought it in bulk. I have127.3 yards and would like to make my blanket wider than 51″ can you tell me how wide I can make the blanket please ?
Is there a way to customize the blanket in such a way that it could have maybe a big heart and then a date and names in the middle? I’m thinking I should knit the whole blanket and then do an additional layer on top… Thanks!
I don’t know how to do that, but maybe you could look at regular knitting patterns to see how they do it.
@Rachael, use stitch fiddle to make design but unfortunately I donāt think it will work for this type of yar I do crochet graphagans using corner to corner crochet
Have you ever done the loop from back to front for one stitch then front to back the second stitch and keep alternating it this way? Iām going to try it.

I had 7 skeins of Bernat (got it on sale really cheap!) They were 7.6 yds each and mine turned out to be 46 x 36. I need another 7 balls to make a decent sized throw. I’ll wait to see if they go on sale again and will grab more. Love this yarn. Thanks.
Have you experienced skeins of loop yarn being “tighter” than others? I was working on a blanket and a second skein I started using seemed to be “tighter” than the first. After knitting about 3 additional rows, they seemed to be “pulling” in to the point I ended up pulling it back out. Have you ever encountered this? Any recommendations how to remedy this?
Oh that’s weird. No, I’m sorry, I haven’t encountered this before. Maybe try googling the problem to see if someone else has?
Can you dry it in a dryer
I did, on gentle. It stayed together, but is a little stretched. That could be from my kids sticking their feet in it and stretching it out though. *insert eye roll*
@Jessica @ Cutesy Crafts, you might be able to block it to get it back in shape.
You can google blocking a crochet blanket. If you need a large area maybe you can use a shower liner on a table or the floor and put it under your blanket.

Hi! Have you washed the blanket yet? How does it hold up in the wash?
Yes, I have washed it a couple times on gentle, in cold water. It has help up fine. It does stretch out a little (so it’s longer). Also, the little tails have come out. Make sure to watch my video on how to make a baby blanket because I show a better way to do transitions without tails.
I guess Iām using smaller skeins of loop yarn because by my calculations Iām going to need approximately 11 skeins to make the size throw you did
The ones I used were 18 yards each.

It does tend to do that but will flatten out a bit when it gets used and stretched.
