Felt Deer Christmas Ornament with Free Pattern

I love deer.  I know, that’s probably a weird thing to say, but I think they are just SO cute!  Any time I see a Christmas decoration or ornament with a deer on it, it’s really hard for me to pass up.  I might even love them more than unicorns!  You know how much I like making felt Christmas ornaments, so I decided to honor my deer obsession with this adorable felt deer Christmas ornament and a free pattern!  If you love this little deer as much as I do, make sure to check out the other felt animal Christmas ornaments that I made this year.  I’ve got a felt penguin ornament and felt polar bear ornament too.

To make this felt deer Christmas Ornament, you’ll need:

• free pattern (instructions to download at the bottom of this post)
• felt: light brown, dark brown, light pink, white, and black
• embroidery floss or thread: light brown, black, light pink, and white
• needle
• pencil or fabric marker
• fiberfill
• scissors
• ribbon or yarn for hanging
• hot glue (optional)

First cut out all of the pattern pieces.

Next, place the two tail pieces together and stitch around the outside using a whip stitch.  Leave a small opening and stuff a small amount of fiberfill into the tail.

Grab one of the body patterns and stitch or glue 3 white spot cutouts on it. Glue or stitch 3 more white spots on the triangular pattern (forehead of the felt deer). Attach the pink inner ear cutouts in the middle of the main light brown ear pieces.

Grab one of the head pieces and attach the triangular forehead piece on the top side of it.  Attach the dark brown nose on the pointy tip of the triangular pattern, in the center of the head.  Now gab the other head piece (backside) and attach the horns and the ear patterns along the top side of it.

Use a pencil or fabric marker to draw the eyes, nose and mouth of the felt deer on the front of the head. Use a black thread to satin stitch along the traced eyes and white thread to stitch 2 small spots inside the eyes. Stitch the mouth using black thread and a back stitch.

Take the plain body pattern and place it on a flat surface. Place the tail on the backside of the plain body piece, making sure that most of the tail remains outside the pattern. Place the other body pattern (with spots) on the top of the plain one, keeping the tail between the both body patterns.

Stitch around the side of the body patterns with a whip stitch to join them together. Keep a small opening in the end to stuff the felt deer with fiberfill.

Place the 2 head pieces together and stitch around the outside, keeping the bottom end open for stuffing.  I forgot to do it at this step, but now is when you will also want to add a loop of yarn or ribbon for hanging.  Just sandwich the ends of it in between the two head pieces and stitch through it.

Insert the bottom open end of the felt head through the open end of the neck part (of the stitched body pattern). Stitch the head and body together.

Once you’re done stitching, tie a knot with the thread and push the needle randomly inside the deer and back out. Cut off extra thread.  And you’re ready to hang her on the tree.  Isn’t she cute?!
