Doveweed Embroidery – October Phenology

For October, I chose a plant that grows wild on the side of the road all over California. It’s called doveweed or mullein because the doves and wild turkeys like to eat the seeds from the plant. Yes, it’s technically a weed, but isn’t a wildflower just a pretty weed? I really love the way they look, almost like a succulent or lamb’s ear plant.

Here’s my embroidery take on the plant.

I kept it very simple with just some satin stitch leaves and French knot centers.

The French knots are a combo of two colors. I used one strand of the green and one strand of a yellow color.

  1. YOU ARE SO COOL! I found your site trying to understand why my mom covered dresser tops and desks with glass but nothing else. I didn’t want to be tacky but I don’t like ruined things when they cost lots and your site explained why she didn’t cover the dining table. But THEN, even cooler: my mom did fancy embroidery too. Normal people can’t understand how artful it was, full of details, museum quality. I see on your site you do understand. I’m happy to see this cuz I miss it and my mom. So thank you.

  2. Hi. Can you email me the Doveweed pattern for October? Last month you sent me the others and told me to ask you for each month’s releases. Don’t know why I cannot download the pdf on my iPad to a folder🤔.
    Thank you,
    Valerie
