Superhero Sleep Masks and More Homemade Father’s Day Gift Ideas

There are two things that are must-haves for me on Mother’s Day: 1) breakfast in bed and 2) a nap after church.  Why shouldn’t dad have the same thing for Father’s Day?  To help dad drift off to dreamland in the middle of the day, I made him a sleep mask using the patterns from my felt superhero masks.  Manliest sleep masks ever, right?!  Plus, who doesn’t want to wake up next to a superhero?  LOL!

To make a superhero sleep mask for dad, you’re gonna need:

– superhero mask patterns – click the links to get them in adult size and children’s size
– felt in different colors depending on the mask you are making
– black felt- to go inside the lining
– lining fabric – I used a skin color for Captain America and white for the other two (get something silky feeling like satin)
– 3/8 inch wide elastic

I’m going to show you how to make the Captain America mask since it’s the most complicated out of the three.  First, cut out the overall shape of your mask pattern in the main color.  For Batman, I cut two so that the ears of the mask would be double layered.

Cut your pattern down to the base like this.  Notice I cut off more on one side so I can use that part of the pattern later.  Draw a line 1/2 inch around the mask pattern and draw where you would like the eyes to be.  I drew my eyes about an inch wide.

Cut around the outside line that you drew.  This is going to make your lining.

Cut another lining piece the same as the first.  Hand or machine stitch the eyes to one of the lining pieces.  I had a little bit of a problem with the fabric puckering when I machine stitched.  If I did it again, I’d probably embroider them by hand.

Pin the two lining pieces, right sides together, and sew around it with a 1/2 inch seam.  Leave a couple of inches un-sewn  at the top so you can turn it later.

Clip around all of the curves making sure you don’t cut the thread.

Turn the lining right-side-out and press with an iron.

Use the pattern to cut another piece in black felt.  This will be going inside the lining to keep out the light and add a little more padding.

Put the black piece of felt up to the lining and trim it a little so it will fit inside.

Stuff the black felt inside the lining and straighten it out.  Sew the opening shut.

Cut out the details of the mask and sew them onto the front.

Pin the mask to the lining.  Cut a piece of elastic about 17 inches long and sandwich the ends of it in between the lining and the felt mask.  Pin the elastic, and sew around the entire mask to attach the lining and elastic.  Sew around the eye holes as well.

I only made these three, but you could easily make a Spiderman and Wolverine mask from my patterns too.  Thor and Hulk might be a little more difficult, but maybe you could swing it.
