Pony Bead Pumpkins – Halloween Kid Craft

I’ve got a fun, fall or Halloween kid craft to share with you today… pony bead pumpkins!  They were so much fun for the kids to make.  They love stringing beads!

Pony Bead Pumpkins - Halloween Kid Craft

To make one, you just need four orange pipe cleaners, a brown pipe cleaner, a green pipe cleaner,  and orange pony beads.  We got our pony beads from craftprojectideas.com (I was given the beads for free.  As always, that does not affect the content of this post or my opinion in any way).  They have so many great kid craft ideas and supplies!

I helped out with the pipe cleaner part a lot since my kids are pretty little.  Older kids would probably be able to do this on their own.  First take two pipe cleaners and make an “X”.  Twist them around each other in the middle.

Attach the other two pipe cleaners in the same manner.  It should look like this when you are done.

String pony beads onto each pipe cleaner.  Love this because it’s building fine motor skills, and it keeps them busy.  Score!

Leave about an inch on the end of each one without beads on it.

Bring all of the ends together and twist them to form the pumpkin’s stem.

Wrap your brown pipe cleaner around the stem and cut off the excess.

Bend the pipe cleaners to form a pumpkin shape.

Wrap your green pipe cleaner around the base of the stem to make the vines.  Cut off the excess.

Curl the ends of the green pipe cleaner with a pen or pencil.

These were very hard for my 7 year old to make. They also don’t look anything like pumpkins. :/

How long are the orange pipe cleaners? When I go online there are all different lengths. Looking to do this with my daughter’s class for Halloween craft.

Thanks Allison

Oh, I didn't know there were different sizes. It's been a while since I made these. I went and checked my craft stash, and I have some in there that are 12 inches. I'm guessing that's what I used. If you want to cut down on costs, you could use smaller ones. That way it would take less beads.

Thanks for the idea; I love it!! I'm thinking about doing this craft with a group of kindergartners (probably 6 kids at a time) as part of their fall harvest party. Do you think this would be a good craft for a group? Approximately how long did it take you to complete? I was planning on pre-twisting the pipe cleaner for them. Thanks so much!

I think it would be a good group craft as long as you have everything prepared before. You are going to probably have to twist all of the pipe cleaner at the end too. They would just be able to do the bead part. I don't remember how long it took my kids. I know I was happy to have them busy for a little while though. :)
