Asymmetrical Necklace with Martha Stewart Jewelry

I am so excited to show you a project that I have been working on with the new Martha Stewart Jewelry line available at Michael’s Craft Stores.  I made this pretty asymmetrical necklace with just a handful of the products available.

I was sent a big box from Plaid Crafts that was full of some of the neatest jewelry making supplies I have ever seen.  I had so much fun using all of it!  What I love most about this line is that you don’t just assemble the jewelry, you actually CREATE it!  The line includes beautiful jewelry glazes, enamels, rhinestones, epoxy clays and more.  The possibilities are endless!

To make this necklace, you will need:

  • chain
  •  jewelry glaze – pool blue
  • butterfly connector
  • 3 mm rhinestone settings
  • 3 mm rhinestones
  • jump rings
  • filigree round setting
  • purple flower cabochon
  • purple Czech beads
  • jewelry glue
  • jewelry wire
  • closure
  • rubbing alcohol
  • toothpick

Set your butterfly connector on your silicone work mat.  (This work mat is also from the Martha Stewart jewelry line, and it’s awesome.  You get it messy and it wipes clean!  I want a really big one to use for all of my messy crafts.)  Wipe the connector with rubbing alcohol to clean it and then apply the jewelry glaze with your brush.  At this point, you can wipe some off to make a more antiqued look, but I liked it more opaque.  Set that aside to dry.

Dip a toothpick in some jewelry glue and put it into six of your settings.  Put a rhinestone in each of the settings.  The wax tip tool is great for picking up and placing the small rhinestones.

Use some more jewelry glue to glue the flower cabochon to your round filigree setting.

Cut some jewelry wire with your flush cutters.  Bend the wire to make a small loop using some round bending pliers.

These things made it so easy to get a perfect loop!

Add one of your rhinestone settings to the loop.

Hold onto the loop using your round nose pliers and wrap the wire around twice to create a wire wrapped loop.  Cut the excess wire.  I suggest looking for a video on how to do this if you have never worked with jewelry wire before.

Add a bead and create a loop on the other end.  Add another rhinestone setting, wrap the wire again, and cut off the excess.

Continue adding beads and rhinestone settings to create a chain.

Use jump rings to connect the butterfly to the cabochon setting to the string of beads.  Connect the whole thing to your chain.

Open up the back of your chain, shorten, and add a closure.

So pretty and so much fun to make!
