Front Door Sign

When you have a little one in the house, you have a need for a “Please Knock” sign. It seems like the only time people use the doorbell is when Leah is asleep.  My husband was making fun of my scrap of paper taped to the doorbell, so I came up with a better solution.

I couldn’t decide between a “Please Knock” and a “No Soliciting” sign, so I combined them into one.

Reasons why I need a no soliciting sign:

  1. The big scary man who, when I opened the door, the first words out of his mouth were, “Don’t worry, I’m not going to rape you.”  WHO SAYS THAT????
  2. The guy who chalk spray painted an X in front of our house when we told him we didn’t want pest control services.  Really?
  3. The man who, after I did not answer the door, decided to stick around for a while as my 3 year old looked at him through the window.  I asked him if he was still there and told him that I did not answer the door to strangers.  He proceeded to tell me through the door that his name was Kevin, and now I know him, so I can answer the door.  He wouldn’t go away!  Kevin, if you ever come to my door again I will be calling the police. You are creepy.
  4.  The man who, after my husband politely refused to fill out our personal information on a “survey”, came back an hour later and doorbell ditched us.

Seriously, WHAT is wrong with people???  Anyway,  I don’t know if the crazy solicitors will actually pay attention to the sign, but at least it’s worth a try.

I made the sign out of a wooden plaque that I painted light blue.  You can get the plaques at any craft store.  The letters are cut out of vinyl using my Silhouette Cameo.  To make the pretty design in the middle, I used the free font Bergamot Ornaments.  You can get the free cut file here.

Use some transfer tape to transfer the vinyl onto the wooden plaque.  If you don’t have a covered porch, you might want to paint over the whole thing with some clear outdoor varnish to protect the paint.

I mounted it on the stucco with some adhesive mounting squares.  Cute and functional!

I’m posting this as a part of the Silhouette monthly challenge that Lauren at The Thinking Closet runs.  I definitely recommend joining her Facebook group if you own a Silhouette.  Email her for more details.

I really love this! My kind of color and love the placement. It reminds me that I need to put something like this by my front door.

Thanks Alisha! I've painted so many things that color. Probably too many. :)

We have crazy solicitor people, too! We actually ended up posting a scary sign of a pit-bull at the end of our driveaway that says, "I can get to the front gate in 1.4 seconds. Can you?" We are SO not those people, but our house is right beside a bike path, and we've had enough strange people wander onto our property, that something had to be done. I really like your tasteful method, though. We might need to do something similar!

And thanks for participating in this month's Silhouette Challenge Group Post, Jessica!

Warmly,LaurenThe Thinking Closet

Haha. That's funny. I've thought about putting a 'beware of dog sign" on the fence even though we don't have one.

OK- number 1 - very cute idea- love it! I had to do this as well because the doorbell is so loud and people did seem to come by only when my twins were napping#2 I hope that it helps- you have some weirdos stopping by- your address must be posted in a small prison somewhere #3 i hope it works- for me and the neighborhood kids they see it and get the picture- I don't want your cookies little girl- but other salesmen see the sign and still try to sell occasionally- thats when i pull the no soliciting sign thats posted on the door trick- and point to it and they leave defeated! score! great sign !

Hahaha... a small prison somewhere... Funny because there was one guy that came by after I wrote this post who said that he just got out and was on probation. So... the sign didn't work. Maybe I should just start pointing to it.

Oh I love this!! We haven't had our doorbell plugged in for the last four years b/c of sleeping babies. :D
